EDWARD Passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. He was born April 12, 1924, in Union City, N.J., to Jeremiah and Anna Anlian. He is survived by his wife, Gwen of Santa Fe, N.M., daughter Robin (John Slevin) of Helena, Mont., son Edward (Paula Dal Santo) of Albuquerque, N.M., son-in-law Wayne Ward of Santa Fe, son-in-law Richard Horton of Albuquerque, and 10 grandchildren: Noelle, Nicholas, Brooke, Arden, Kendall, Quentin, Amanda, Kristan, Miles and Savannah. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, his older brothers, Ara and Haig, and daughters Jill Anlian-Ward and Holly Anlian. Ed graduated from Emerson High School in New Jersey in 1940. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics, chemistry and education in 1950 from Albright College in Reading, Pa., where he was a distinguished graduate. In addition, Ed attended the University of Wichita in Kansas. He received his master's degree in mathematics in 1959 from the University of Iowa and did doctorate work in mathematics from 1964-1966 at Syracuse University in New York. Ed enlisted in the Air Force in 1943 as a flying cadet and attained the aeronautical rating of master navigator. He flew B29s and B47s. Ed served in three wars: World War II, Korean War (he flew 33 missions) and the Viet Nam war. He also taught at the Air Force Academy from 1959-1964, where he tutored many cadets and authored several math study guides. Ed served his country in many positions in the Air Force including Deputy Chief of Staff, Data System at SAC headquarters, Offutt AFB, Nebraska. He retired from the Air Force in December 1978 at the rank of Colonel. His earned medals include the Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal. Ed's love of teaching began at Robesonia High School in Pennsylvania where he taught math, chemistry and physics. After retiring from the Air Force, he taught mathematics and computer science for 15 years at Santa Fe Community College. He also worked for the State of New Mexico from 1979 to 1983. While in college, Ed lettered in cross country, track and basketball all four years. He is a member of Albright College's Athletic Hall of Fame and was named to the All Century Team for basketball. He was the leading scorer all four years with a total of 1,601 points and is the seventh all-time leading scorer at Albright. He was an avid runner and squash player until he was 78 years old and was a member of the New Mexico Squash Association and El Gancho Tennis Club in Santa Fe. He married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Bachman in 1949 in Reading. They had four children, Robin, Jill and twins, Edward and Holly. He was a loving husband and father and was particularly fond and proud of his 10 grandchildren. A service will be held for Ed at the First Presbyterian Church, 208 Grant Ave. in Santa Fe on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Reception will follow at the church.
