HERBERT O. Bert to his friends and customers, age 66. died on October 6, 2011 from the damaging results of a stroke in Feb of 2010. He is survived by his sister, Pat Burke, Ill; and his extended family. Born and raised in DC , Bert moved to ABQ in 1971 after receiving a Masters degree in chemistry from the University of Florida, as well as a degree in Philosophy. He worked at Kirtland, following his chemist training, taught at Freedom High, did real estate and finally, found his true calling; sharing his love of herbs and the healing they do. Bert taught herb use and plant identification at UNM and all the healing schools in the area. He did videos about healing and using herbs and finally opened and ran the The Herb Store in the Nob Hill area for over twenty years. He continued teaching private classes and taught a certified herbal program called Foundations in Health. Bert was an accomplished, self-taught flutist and became an amazing photographer, focusing on plants and flowers. He won awards at the State Fair and from the NM Magazine. A memorial gathering will take place at Elena Gallegos Park (Double Shelter Area on Sunday, October 16, 2011 from noon to 2:00 p.m. Bert's friends will be welcome. It will be a Pot Luck. Bring an index card with a "Bert Memory" to share. Bert donated his body to science (lonetreemedical.com) and his cremated remains will be privately scattered. Bert taught us all what it is to be a loving, gentle and caring man. He will be greatly missed.
