Obituary for KROPSCHOT

HENRY Age 84, died peacefully September 30, 2011. He is survived by his wife Claire of 61 year; daughters Susan Kropschot of Santa Fe and Anne Weitz (Tom) of Priest Lake, Idaho; and grandchildren Sarah Shoquist (Trason), and Adam Weitz. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan to Henry and Della (Burdorf) Kropschot, he graduated from Litchfield High School, Michigan, before joining the U.S. Navy and serving aboard the USS Enterprise CV-6 during World War II. After the war, he returned to earn his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in physics and mathematics from Michigan State University. He moved to Santa Fe in 1989 when he accepted the position of Laboratory Liaison Officer from the Office of the President of the University of California to the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Prior to that he held positions as the Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Sciences at the University of California Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory; Director of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences at the U. S. Department of Energy; and Director of the Cryogenics Division of the National Bureau of Standards, U.S. Department of Commerce in Boulder, Colorado. He was Professor Adjunct in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Colorado; taught at the University of California at Los Angeles; and was Guest Professor at the E.T.H. in Zurich Switzerland. He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal. He published more than 60 papers in cryogenic engineering and low temperature physics and served as editor of the Review of Scientific Instruments and Cryogenics. In retirement, he was active with the Don Quixotes and the Employer Support Of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Richard H. Memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, October 7, 2011 at The Church of the Holy Faith, 311 East Palace Avenue, Santa Fe.
