Obituary for JONES

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday September 25, 2011

LUCILLE OVELA 89, a resident of Albuquerque since 1959, passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011. Lucille was born November 28, 1921, in Windom, Texas. She traveled around the country to various military posts with her husband, who was a career Navy man, until finally settling in New Mexico. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Yolanda Jones King and husband, Dr. Gary King of Stanley, NM; daughter, Paula Margo Jones of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Tami L. Traub of Albuquerque and Jonathon Jones Atwood of West Virginia. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Jones and a son, Craig Jones. She attended Stanley Union Church. Growing up in Honey Grove, Texas, during the Great Depression, Lucille helped her family make ends meet by picking cotton and corn in nearby fields. One of her fondest memories as a little girl was when famed Texan Sam Rayburn, speaker of the US House of Representatives, bought her an ice cream sundae on her birthday. That began her lifelong tenure as an active member of the Democratic Party. Lucille was a member of the NM Democratic Women. She volunteered on the political campaigns of former NM Governor Bruce King and current NM Attorney General Gary King. Her favorite activities were gardening, walking, and gathering aluminum cans for recycling. Lucille loved her children and grandchildren very much and in her later years she was inseparable from her doll collection, whom she affectionately called her "babies." The family wishes to thank all of Lucille's caregivers whose care and support was invaluable. Pallbearers will be Gary King, Stephanie Loverro, Jim Lohkamp, Gordon Little, Bobby Kyle, and Gloria Gonzales. Honorary Pallbearers are Tami Traub and Jonathon Atwood. Visitation begins 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, followed by services at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Russell Lee officiating.
