Obituary for AMUNDSON

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday September 25, 2011

MARLYS R. age 88, passed away on July 6, 2011. She was born Marlys Hanson on September 12, 1922 in Sisseton, SD and her siblings were Erling, Gerhard, Lois, and Roseland. Her parents were Herman and Jorand Hanson. She will be missed by her four children and their spouses: Bruce and Brent Amundson, Debra Magers and husband, John, and Scott Amundson and wife, Janet Williams; and by her surviving brother, Erling Hanson. Marlys graduated Laseuer High School in Minnesota and also attended Gustavus Adolphus College. She married Floyd Amundson in 1945. They remained together for 64 years, until his death in 2010. Floyd served in the Air Force for 28 years. His tour of duty took them to New Guinea, the Philippines, Kirtland AFB NM, NASA Space Center FL, and the Pentagon. He retired and they returned to Albuquerque where they remained for 41 years. Marlys and Floyd traveled everywhere: the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. They often traveled with friends. Whether it was riding an elephant in Thailand, staying on a houseboat in Kashmir, or sipping tea in Paris, she loved it. Floyd was an avid hot air balloonist since 1975. He flew the first Shrine Balloon and they enjoyed many years of outings. Marlys loved going out to lunch with her friends. She loved groups and clubs. They were members of the Officers' Club, the Shriners, the Federated Women's Club, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), the Gourmet Club and numerous charities. She was a faithful and beloved friend of many. She maintained a running correspondence with a group of eight high school friends for over 75 years. When she was recently hospitalized, she received 85 get well cards. Marlys was always gracious and friendly, even when she wasn't feeling well. When she moved out of assisted living, they said she was the nicest lady in the building. Even when she was in pain, she was polite, grateful for assistance and good natured. During her last trip to the hospital, I asked the doctor how she was. She responded. "Well, she's so good natured and friendly; she seems fine until you look at her monitor -- Ack!" After counseling, her minister asked if she had a good life, she smiled meekly, said yes then curled up and went to sleep. In her last days, friends visited and her eyes were clear and bright - she was cheerful until she gently passed away. Marlys will be missed by all who knew her. Her Memorial Service and reception will be held Friday, September 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Manzano Del Sol Samaritan Village, 5201 Roma Ave. NE, Albuquerque, 87108 (Lomas and San Mateo). She will be interred with her husband at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, NAMI or Casa de Vida Nueva, 7316 Carriage Rd.
