Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday September 22, 2011

ALPHONSE 1917-2011 Affectionately known to all as "Uncle Al", 94, beloved grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. He was born in Capitan, New Mexico in 1917 to Jacobo and Lilly Jiron, and spent the better part of his youth in Quemado and Reserve, N.M. He worked as a water boy for the cattle drives between Quemado and Magdalena. It was during this time that he honed his skills as an expert hunter and fisherman, which he continued to enjoy throughout his life. He took great pride in teaching his beloved nephews everything he knew about the great outdoors. He was also a self-styled guitarist and photographer. Uncle Al never met a stranger, loved to tell jokes and his sense of humor was evident the minute you met him. In his teen years, his family moved to Santa Fe and he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp working in road construction. During World War II he volunteered to drive military trucks transporting ammunition to the depots in Flagstaff, Arizona. While in Flagstaff, he met and married Janet Glenn, and soon after, moved to Albuquerque where he was employed by Sandia National Laboratories as a physical plant supervisor. He retired from the labs after 30 years of outstanding service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet in 1999; his parents; brothers, Pat and Jake Jiron; sisters, Sally Baca and Virginia Quillen; brothers-in-law, Louie Baca, Jack Quillen, and Arno Romero and sister-in-law, Carmen Jiron. Al is survived by his grandson, Mike Glenn and his wife, Cheryl; his loving great-grandchildren, Teagun and Sterling Glenn; loving sister, Barbara Romero; aunt, Viola Jackson and sister-in-law, Dorothy Jiron. Uncle Al is survived by many loving nephews, nieces, and very special friends, Bob Raught, Joann Gaines and Becky. A Graveside Service will be held at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens on Friday, September 23, at 11:00 a.m. A very special thank you to his loving nephews Nick and Ben Romero who have been his devoted caregivers for the past four years and to the staff and residents at Brookdale Place for all their wonderful care and friendship.
