KIM WARREN, DR. Was born in Phoenix, AZ on October 20, 1952. He passed away Friday morning, September 9, 2011 after a period of declining health. Kim received a Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering at Arizona State University and a Master's Degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering and microwaves at the University of Texas, Arlington in 1981 and 1985. He was an extraordinary person and an exceptionally creative individual who thrived on the unexplored. Kim's contributions to magnetic switching and repetitive pulsed power led the way to the world's highest average power pulsed accelerator that enabled years of research with Fortune 500 companies in areas we could have never envisioned. His work on state changing dielectrics and solid state opening switches was truly ground breaking. Kim's dedication and love of science and engineering was an inspiration to those who truly knew him. His extreme and ongoing generosity to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as well as his work to support Christmas charity drives that lifted the spirits of hundreds of children in need over many years. Kim regularly participated in serving Thanksgiving meals to those in need. Kim was a charter member of the motorcycle group, The BABBS. The BABBS said he was always in good humor, great fun to be around, an experienced, super-safe rider and a guy who truly loved Harleys and the BABBS group. As a professor, he was a mentor to his students. As a scientist at Sandia, he was a world class expert in his field. Most of all, Kim was a man with a big tender heart of gold. He was a brilliant, sensitive, wonderful, funny, fun, generous, creative and a best friend and brother whose integrity, honesty, and sense of ethics was rivaled by none. Kim will be deeply missed but long remembered with great affection. He is survived by his sister, Kris Bowne-Reed; and two brothers, Gregory Rand Reed and Allen Brent Reed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, in his name, to St. Jude Children's Hospital would be appreciated.
