Obituary for FORTENBURY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 21, 2011

JOHN P. December 29, 1924-August 16, 2011 Sadly, another member of the "greatest generation" was lost when John passed away after a brief illness. He was 86 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence Ann and Olious Lee Fortenbury; his brothers, Lenard Kerlee, Charles Kerlee, Lee Fortenbury, Jr., and James Fortenbury; as well as his three sisters, Louise Morris, Delores Coleman and Dolly Cobb. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A hero, like many who we owe a debt of gratitude, John earned the Purple Heart as a United States Army Staff Sergeant in the pacific theater during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, John settled in Albuquerque where he helped build the city he loved as a member of Carpenter's Local 1319, from where he would eventually retire. John has requested to laid to rest at one of his favorite places without ceremony and that in lieu of flowers, a donation of time or money be made to local Veteran's Administration facility. A special note of thanks to V & L Care assisted living and Hospice de la Luz. Our family wishes a heartfelt farewell to our beloved Uncle, who through living his life made this world a better place for all of us. FRENCH 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE (505) 275-3500
