Obituary for WENTE

HERMANN AUGUST Age 82, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011. He was born February 3, 1929, in Newport News, Virginia. After graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute as an Aeronautical Engineer, he served for six years in the U.S. Air Force as a fighter pilot stationed in Albuquerque. Following military service, he worked at Sandia National Laboratory for 33 years-including two years at Bell Labs in Washington, D.C. His work took him to many rocket launch sites in the States and the Pacific. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Baker Wente (Meg); daughter, Clara Wente and husband Damon Alcorn; son, Will and wife Christie Wente and their two sons, Ethan and Taren; two sisters, Else Bunch and Helen and husband David Beckman, plus one niece and three nephews. Hermann was preceded in death by his parents, Wilhelm and Else Sturm Wente and by J. Milton Bunch and two nephews. Hermann helped found the Albuquerque Soaring Club for which he served as instructor and tow pilot. He was a sixty-year member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In addition to family, he had a love for sailing, camping, history and gardening. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Menaul Blvd NE.
