Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday July 10, 2011

ORA JO Died peacefully in Edmond, OK on July 5, 2011 with her beloved grandsons by her side. She was 94 years old. Ora Jo was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on August 12, 1916 to Orria Owen and Mary Ellen Hunt. She resided in Hughes County during the early part of her life where she married and started her family. Her husband was mayor of Wetumka, Ok and consequently she became an active part of the political arena. After the death of her first husband, Herman "Red" Darks, she met and married Marvin Puckett. This marriage would be the beginning of a new life for her on the Navajo Reservation. It would set in motion the union that would create the family that would love and cherish her until the day she died. Jo made volunteering an instrumental part of her life wherever she lived. While on the Reservation she was an advocate for the Navajo people and was instrumental in the developing and construction of a new Indian hospital that serves the people to this day. While living in Belen, NM, Jo volunteered at the Belen Harvey House Museum which brought a rich piece of history to her community. The most important part of her life was her family. She was tireless in supporting, encouraging, nurturing and loving them. We are forever grateful for her presence in our lives. Surviving family members include her son Don Darks and his wife Lori Darks; grandchildren, Tanya and Ron Boucher, Troy and Rachel Darks, Bryan Darks and Dalita Albert, Ryan and Jen Darks, Randy and Jennifer Dunning, Sarah Dunning; great-grandchildren, Tayah Marie Darks, Jennie Jo-Lee Darks, Dycen Wayne Darks, Alyson Darks, Isaiah Dunning and Jada Dunning.
