Obituary for MYERS

William John Myers, a resident of Rio Rancho from 1977 to 2009, passed away in Mission Viejo, California on May 20, 2011. Bill was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on July 19, 1915. He was the second son of Robert Earl Myers and Hallie Bonner Myers. Bill attended the U.S. Naval Academy (Class 1938). He joined Babcock and Wilcox Company in August of 1937 in their Marine Boiler Division. During WWII he was in charge of coordinating boiler shipments to the many shipyards building hundreds of naval and merchant marine ships. After the war he became a Sales Engineer and, in 1955 was made Marine Manager for the Great Lakes and Canada. When U.S. shipbuilding deteriorated he transferred to the Industrial Boiler Sales Division and completed 40 years of service to Babcock and Wilcox in September of 1977. He retired and moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The Stock Equipment Company of Cleveland, Ohio (the nations predominate supplier of Power Plant Coal Handling Equipment) hired him to represent them in the Western United States. When the anticipated growth in the use of coal as a common industrial fuel did not develop Bill retired again in 1980. Bill was an ardent golfer and friend to many in the Rio Rancho community. He was a member of Chamisa Hills Country Club having joined the original Panorama Golf and Country Club in 1975. He was an active member of the New Mexico Seniors Golf Association and served in several capacities including President in 1998 and 1999. In 2009 he and his wife Beck moved to Rancho Santa Margarita, California. His friends should know that on his last round of golf, at the age of 92 in 2009, he came three inches away from hitting a hole-in-one on a 200 yard par three! Bill is survived by his wife, Beck, (Rebekah Shipler) with whom he lived a long, happy and wonderful married life of 73 years; He is also survived by two superb sons and their wives, William Jr. and Shirley Myers of Mission Viejo, California and Gordon and Diane Myers of Hillsborough, CA.; five lovely granddaughters; and ten great-grandchildren Bill has been cremated at the O'Conner Mortuary in Laguna Hills, CA. His ashes will be spread in accordance with his personal wishes.
