Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 15, 2011

John Gary Boyd, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 2001 entered into eternal life Friday, April 29, 2011 in Albuquerque. Son of Bedford and Myrtle (Kerr) Boyd, he was born in Boston, MA on July 20, 1929 and grew up in Fort Fairfield, ME. Valedictorian of his High School class, John received a Professor Augustus Howe Buck Scholarship to attend Boston University, from which he graduated with honors in 1951. He received his degree in history "with special distinction" and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Gamma Mu. Boston University awarded him a Professor Augustus Howe Buck Fellowship to pursue graduate studies in Economics at Columbia University. His studies were interrupted by the Korean War. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. John then resumed his studies and earned his Master of International Affairs degree in International Economics from Columbia University School of International Affairs in 1957. He then joined the faculty of the State University of New York College at Buffalo and was a Professor of Economics from 1958-1965. In 1965, he joined the United States International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. as an International Economist. For the next twenty-five years he was involved with the Trade Agreements Program of the United States. When he retired in 1990 as Chief of the Trade Agreements Commission, he was honored with a Distinguished Service Award by the Commission for his "many significant contributions to the Trade Agreements Program of the United States". John thoroughly enjoyed his participation in the various activities of the schools and universities where he studied or taught, the Episcopal Church, professional organizations, civic and community organizations, youth sports programs, and scouting. The involvement that gave him the most satisfaction was coaching youth in baseball, basketball, and football in Sterling Park, VA. He was generous with his time and talent with all groups, often serving in a leadership capacity. Upon retirement, he and his wife, Pat moved to Silver City. They accomplished all the things they planned to do to enjoy retirement. They made new friends, traveled throughout the United States and abroad, read books, enjoyed the musical and other cultural activities of the Southwest, and visited with their children and friends across the country. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Patricia V. Wilson Boyd. He is survived by his four children, Kent Boyd, Laura Boyd, Sharon Boyd, and Scott Boyd and wife, the Reverend Annette Arnold-Boyd and granddaughter, Rebecca; a brother, Colby Boyd and his wife, Gail; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd. NE, on Saturday, May 21, 2011, 9:00 a.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Fort Fairfield High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, P.O.
