Mildred Collins Thompson was born on March 28, 1918 to Thomas Avery Collins and Cleo Collins in De Quincy, Louisiana. She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College and taught in Pittsburg, Kansas at the Pittsburg Jr. High School before she married. She worked as a school counselor, home economics teacher and reading specialist. She was employed by the Artesia Public Schools in Artesia, New Mexico and with the Santa Fe Public Schools in Santa Fe. She married William C. Thompson, Jr. in 1942. Brigadier General Thompson was a decorated soldier during World War II, serving in the U. S. Army Engineers. Mildred was actively involved in P. E. O. and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She served as an officer and president of Las Aranas Spinners and Weavers Guild in Albuquerque. An avid hand weaver, she studied Aubusson tapestry weaving in France. She exhibited her tapestry weavings in Albuquerque and around the country. Mildred was a student of the French language for many years and an excellent hand knitter as well. She is survived by daughter, Barbara D. Pritchard, of Seattle, Washington; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn L. and Maxime Laville of Ferrerieres, France, son William C. Thompson, III DVM, PhD and his wife Myra Chang Thompson of Belen, and David Thompson and his wife, Lesley J. Thompson of Park City, Utah. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mildred was an independent woman who supported higher education for women. Mildred was a resident at Woodmark Uptown. She was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church in Albuquerque. Friends may visit from 4:00 - 7:00 Monday, April 4, 2011 at French ~ Lomas Location. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 10000 Candelaria Road NE, Albuquerque, NM.
