Obituary for KROTH

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday March 27, 2011

Doris Jane Majors Kroth, 80, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Roger Kroth. She is survived by her brother JR Majors and wife Ruth, Overland Park, KS; her sons, Michael and wife Lana of Boise, ID and David of Santa Clarita, CA; daughters, Marianne of Albuquerque, NM and Amy Holt and husband Mike of Portales, NM; five grandchildren, Shane (Lisa) and Piper Kroth, Kacy (Lukas) Cash, SrA Travis Holt and Jason Gonzales; five great-grandchildren, Alex, Madison, Karabella, Marlee and Abrahm; and her nieces Janis Howard and Karen Bogle and their families. Jane was born on March 21, 1930 in Roff, OK to Jess and Flora Mae Majors. She was truly a Depression baby and grew up in rural Oklahoma where times were difficult. They lived life without running water, used the "outhouse", and had to auction off all of their worldly goods and leave the farm. She often reminded her family members that "but for the Grace of God we would have put our mattress on top of our old car (like in the book 'Grapes of Wrath') and we would have had to go to California." Because of this experience she drilled into her children the importance of spending and saving money wisely. Good fortune came to them when they moved to Winfield, KS where her parents ran the Hudson Gas Station. After graduating from high school in Winfield, Jane attended Southwestern College where she worked her way through school as a telephone operator. She married Roger and they started a family. After her last child was born she continued her education and received her bachelor's degree from Wichita State University and her Master's degree from the University of Kansas. The family headed to Albuquerque, NM where she worked as a special education teacher and diagnostician for the Albuquerque Public Schools for over 20 years. When she retired she developed a deep interest in the genealogy of the Kroth and Majors families and was the family historian. She was also an avid gardener and has passed this interest to her great grandchildren. She loved to read and shared not only her passion for reading with her children but in particular the author Louis L'Amour, because he wrote about the Southwest. She enjoyed fellowship with her friends in Naomi Circle at St. John's United Methodist Church in Albuquerque. A family-only celebration will be held at a future date.
