Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday March 09, 2011

Joan Martha Allensworth, Home free, in the arms of her Lord Jesus Christ. She joins her parents, Julius and Cecilia Mackey, her brothers Robert, Paul, Jerry and Bill, her sisters Mary, Rosie and Lois, her son Daniel and her granddaughter Elizabeth McNew. She leaves behind her children and their spouses: Mary McKee and her husband, Gary, Lisa Westfall and her husband, John, Beverly Anderson, Judy McNew and her husband Kevin, Susan Wiley and her husband, Greg, James Allensworth and his wife Ana, and Andrew Allensworth and his wife, Susan. She was a generous and kind grandmother to nineteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, James Mackey, Larry Mackey, Tommy Mackey and Johnny Mackey, their families and many nieces and nephews, all in Ohio. She worked as a nurse for several years in Albuquerque at Presbyterian Hospital, St. Francis Gardens, and Mesa Del Sol Good Samaritan. She volunteered at St. Francis Gardens, Sisters of the Poor in Cincinnati and Ronald McDonald House. Joan comforted many in their final hours of life, including her brother, Monsignor Father Robert Mackey, S.M. Joan was a devout Roman Catholic and could be found in the mornings praying quietly at the dining room table. She was a friend to many, an inspiration to her children, and will be missed by all who knew her. She loved walking, gardening, visiting with friends, and sewing. We have yet to duplicate her delicious cinnamon rolls! She was an avid Star Trek fan from the show's earliest beginnings, and loved a variety of music with jazz being one of her favorites. She lived simply and served others graciously, traveling for extended times to Denver and Omaha to help care for her granddaughters who were ill. The family wishes to thank her caregivers, residents and staff at St. John Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, her family in Ohio, and Total Community Care - PACE for their compassionate care of our mother the last several years. A Rosary will be recited Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 5:00 PM flowered by celebration of the Memorial Funeral Mass at 5:30 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5310 Claremont NE.
