Obituary for SMITH

Richard "Dick" Lee Smith, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, passed away on Feb. 1, 2011 at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife Doris A. Hoenes from Bad Homburg, Germany where they were married; his son, Mark Waterhouse and wife Gina; grandson Gavin and granddaughter Nicole of Palm Harbor, Florida; daughter Julie Wainwright, husband Allan; grandsons Lance and Nolan of Albuquerque; daughter Monica Goode and husband Patrick; grandson Austen and step granddaughter, Laney of MidWest City Oklahoma; his half-sister Carol Mulloy and husband Ken of Topsham, Maine; half-brother James A. Smith of Blades, Delaware; and half-brother Robert H. Waterhouse and wife Bonnie of Duxbury, Massachusetts. Dick served in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific, in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts with the US Army. He retired from the Army in October 1968 as a MSG with 22 years of active duty. Dick also worked for the Security Division, Field Command, Defense Nuclear Agency, Kirtland AFB and retired in Feb 1993. He enjoyed his retirement in his woodworking shop, making furniture and toys for his family. He also researched his family tree back to England in the 1300's. Dick spent many pleasant hours donating his time at the Rio Grande Nature Center for six or seven years. Dick trained in three foreign languages, German, Chinese Mandarin and Japanese while with the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps for 11 years working on various security/intelligence assignments. He was a member of Mesa #68, AF&AM Lodge and the Army CIC Veterans. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery on Feb. 7, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rio Grande Nature Center, 2901 Candelaria Road NW, Albuquerque, NM.
