Obituary for BLUMENSHINE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday February 06, 2011

Leslie Margaret Blumenshine, 91, died Thursday, February 3, 2011 in the comfort of her daughter's home in Albuquerque. She was born November 1, 1919 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Wiley and Bertha Medearis. As a young girl, Margaret and her family moved to Phoenix, AZ hoping that a drier climate would improve her dad's health. In 1937, she graduated from Phoenix Union High School where she made life-long friends and later attended several reunions, the last being her 65th. After graduation, the family moved once again to Long Beach, CA. It was here that she met and married Russell Blumenshine of Albuquerque on April 17, 1940. Their two daughters were born during their years here also. Returning to Albuquerque in 1948, Russell and Margaret established two dairies; one on Edith Boulevard NE and the last on Gun Club Road in the South Valley. Margaret was a true partner in their business. A few of her many tasks were bookkeeping, weighing hay, making and feeding gruel to sick calves, and driving the milk truck to the creamery. Her hard work and willingness to help in any way she could, kept things running more smoothly. In 1964, Russell and Margaret sold the dairy and made a final move to Los Lunas, NM where they began another dairy farm and later started a cattle business, which they ran until Russell's death in 1981. While living in Los Lunas, Margaret began bowling and enjoyed many years of league bowling and traveling to tournaments. She was also active in the Pilot Club and New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau. Moving back to Albuquerque in 1984, Margaret was able to travel to places she never imagined she would see. She volunteered at the Senior Citizens Law Office for several years and supported many other causes and charities as well as attending Immanuel Presbyterian Church. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her a lot of enjoyment and she has been a strong influence in all of their lives. Margaret is survived by her two daughters, Mary Jo Tennison and Judy Bonaguidi of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Richard Lay (Vanessa), Lori Tennison (Rick), Eric Bonaguidi (Simone), Russell Bonaguidi, David Bonaguidi and Leslie Davis; great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Ross, Kelli, Gabrielle, Kyle, Erick, Rody, Logan, Connor, Noah, Kaleb, Rilee and Hannah; two great-great-grandchildren, Isaac and Isabella; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her brother, Lucian Medearis; and her son-in-law, Richard Bonaguidi. The family of Margaret Blumenshine would like to thank Ambercare Hospice for their highly professional, but very personal care for her during the past several years. Her "team", Nikki, Christine, Bertha, Angela, Dr. Goldman, Chaplain Robert and volunteer Kirsty, responded not only to her physical needs, but her emotional ones as well, making the past two years so much easier. Services will be held on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 2:00 p.m. at French - University Chapel. Friends may visit one hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menual Blvd NE. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons, Richard Lay, Eric, Russell, and David Bonaguidi, Ross Lay, Kyle Tennison, and Erick Lay. Honorary pallbearers will be Benny Urias and Chuck and Rick Tennison. Memorial contributions may be sent to Ambercare Foundation, 420 N. Main Street, Belen, NM 87002.
