Obituary for HEADY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 26, 2010

Charlotte Heady, age 94, died on Friday, December 17, 2010, at her home. She was born in Sawyer, ND, on November 3, 1916, to John and Lauretta (Skinner) McDougall, the fourth of six children. She grew up on a farm along the Mouse River homesteaded by her maternal grandfather, and graduated from Sawyer High School in 1934. After completing a secretarial course at Bemis Business School in Minot and taking a civil service exam she left North Dakota and moved to Washington, D.C. to work at the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. While there she met her husband of 64 years, Ferrel Heady, former president of UNM, and during World War Two, after the birth of their first child, she lived in San Francisco while he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war they moved to Ann Arbor, where he was a professor at the University of Michigan, and for the next twenty years she devoted herself to managing their home and raising four children. On sabbatical leaves the family lived for a year in Manila, the Philippines, in 1954, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, for the first half of 1965. After moving to Albuquerque in 1967, while still raising her youngest children, she ably performed the many and varied duties that are asked of a UNM president's spouse. She was a board member for All Faiths Home and delivered Meals on Wheels for 23 years. In 1994 she was honored by Gov. Bruce King with a Certificate of Appreciation for her service to improve the lives of present and future generations of New Mexicans. She traveled widely, through North America, Europe, South America, and Australia, and to China and Egypt, but loved living in New Mexico. She enjoyed a game of bridge, and over three decades played countless doubles matches with her many friends at the Tennis Club of Albuquerque. She was a woman of quiet dignity and compassion who made enduring friendships throughout her life, a loving wife, and a wonderful mother. She will be missed by all who knew her, but especially by her children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ferrel; her brothers, Neil and John; her sisters, Jean, Lillian, and Fanny; and her grandson, Ian August. She is survived by her daughter, Judith August of Austin, TX; her son, Richard Heady and his wife, Connie Fernandez of Albuquerque; her daughter, Margaret Heady of Cheney, WA; and her son, Thomas Heady of Albuquerque. A service honoring her life will be held Sunday, December 26, 2010, 2:00 p.m., at French - University Chapel. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider All Faiths Home, Meals on Wheels, and the UNM Presidential Scholarship Fund.
