Obituary for PENKA-WEAHKEE

Bessie Penka-Weahkee, 86, born April 5, 1924 in Temple, TX. She and her first husband, Erwin Penka came to Regina, NM during his service in the U.S. Army, while Bessie took care of the home and family. After Erwin's service, the family relocated to Joliet, IL, where they lived for more than 20 years. When Erwin retired, they returned to Regina, NM, where they enjoyed each other for more than 50 years, until Erwin's death in the early 1990's. Bessie remained in Regina until she remarried in the late 1990's. Her second husband, Fred Weahkee died in 2009, at which time she came to Albuquerque, due to health concerns. She was a long time member of Cuba Baptist Church, and most recently had been a member of Mesa View Baptist Church in Los Lunas, NM. In addition to her husbands, Bessie was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Brookman. She is survived by her children, Gene Penka and Marshall Penka; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, December 20, 2010 with funeral services at 2:00 p.m., at French~University Chapel, 1111 University Blvd NE.
