Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 21, 2010

Norman Luther Darrow was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 18, 1918 and passed away on November 19, 2010 in Rio Rancho. He married Harriet Driskell on January 18, 1941. Mr. Darrow received three degrees from Indiana State University including his B.S. in Education, his M.S. in Education, and his Ed. A. in Secondary Education. Norman taught at Wiley High School during the initial phase of his career with the Vigo County Schools. The second portion of his career highlighted his administrative skills as he was named Director of Personnel, and remained in that capacity until 1970. Desiring to return to the classroom, he finished his teaching career in 1983 at Terre Haute North High School. Mr. Darrow loved teaching and also enjoyed playing and coaching tennis. Norman attended Purdue University for three years prior to transferring to Indiana State in 1940. He lettered at Purdue each year and was the most improved player in 1938. He also coached the Wiley tennis team for several years and remained active as a recreational player most of his adult life. He was also an accomplished golfer and recorded a hole-in-one in 1935. Mr. Darrow relished his retirement until Alzheimer's disease robbed him of his capabilities. He and his wife gradually transformed their home on Lakeview Drive into a vivid palette of living color through hours of toil in their gardens. Mr. Darrow also basked in the love of his family and is survived by: sister, Nancy Yeager; son, Gregory L. Darrow (Beverly); granddaughters, Amy L. Tomlinson (Brett), Amanda L. Wedl (Brian), Rachel E. Darrow; great-grandsons, Fynn R. Wedl and Grey D. Wedl. His beloved wife, Harriet, preceded Norman in death on November 11, 2009. The family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org) in lieu of flowers.
