Obituary for THORPE

Emmet Joseph Thorpe, 82 was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 24, 1928 and passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 10, 2010. He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Wise, his father, Emmet Thorpe, Sr. and one grandson. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Patricia (Placitas, NM); daughters Susan Archer (Westminster, CO), Nancy Calhoun (Plano, TX), JoAnn Barnes (Salem, OR), Barbara Thorpe (Cheyenne, WY), Carol Schoeppner (Las Cruces, NM), Patricia Ray (Tatum, NM), Emily Orr (Glendale, AZ), and Heather Lamar (Las Vegas, NV); 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. After graduating from college at age 17, Emmet received his Doctor of Medicine degree at George Washington University School of Medicine, then worked at Duke University Hospital where he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery. After serving in the Air Force, Emmet moved to Roswell, NM where he raised his daughters. During his 20 year private orthopedic surgery practice in Roswell, Emmet held numerous posts at St. Mary's and Medical Center Hospitals including Chief of Surgery, Physical Therapy and President of the Medical Staff. He also served as team physician for Goddard and Dexter High Schools for many years, was the company physician for several local businesses and provided support to multiple other community organizations. Emmet lived and worked in Phoenix, AZ for 4 years. He was employed by the US Postal Service as the Area Medical Director and served for 2 years in the Army Reserves. After moving to Albuquerque and working 12 years at Lovelace Medical Center in Occupational Medicine, Emmet retired and found time to indulge in his passions. He established a video art production company in order to preserve the historic and cultural aspects of New Mexico. Emmet worshiped at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church where he created and maintained the church library. He enjoyed traveling, walking his dog and satisfying his insatiable thirst for life and spiritual issues. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 27 at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church in Placitas, NM.
