Obituary for STROME

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday November 07, 2010

Richard "Dick" Kenneth Strome, aged 90, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at his residence in Albuquerque of complications due to an infection. Thank you to all of the caregivers who did their best to make his past few months comfortable. Dick was born February 11, 1920 in Albuquerque at Presbyterian Hospital to Gertrude and Roy Strome. He spent his childhood, which mirrored the "Little Rascals," in Albuquerque with his younger brother Thomas. Dick was a 1936 graduate of Albuquerque High School. He attended UNM and graduated from the Chicago American Academy of Art in 1940. Near the end of his studies in Chicago, he met a beautiful brunette "pool shark" named Elaine Radic, whom he later married in 1944. Dick served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He continued his studies after the war, and was employed in the advertising field. In 1949, the family moved back to Albuquerque where he worked as a technical artist for Sandia Corporation. Dick was an honored employee of Sandia National Laboratories for 30 years and retired in 1980. His talent for art was pursued both at work and at home. Examples ranged from oil portraits to a large snow sculpture of Lincoln's head inspired by a five dollar bill and a two foot deep snow storm in the 1950's. Dick and Elaine traveled the world together and he continued his world travels after Elaine's death in 1995. Dick became a Roman Catholic in 1975 and his beautiful portrait of Christ was given freely to many people around the world. Dick is survived by his sons, Richard Strome, Jr. and wife, Paula, Chris Strome and wife, Ana, and daughter, Laurie Moodie and husband, Steve; and his two grandchildren, Derek and Kelley, as well as his brother, Tom Strome and wife, Barbara. Dick Strome was a man who was a loyal son, brother, husband, father and friend. Dick lived a lucky life and knew it. He never shirked a task and lived up to his responsibilities with honor. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum Chapel on Saturday, November 6, 2010. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 10501 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Suite 300, Albuquerque, NM 87111.
