Obituary for THOMAS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Saturday October 23, 2010

Charles Lyle "Butch", "Charlie" was released from his Earthly bonds in the early morning hours on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in the company of a close friend. Charlie was a modest yet remarkable man who amassed great wealth in the form of friends. Though he lived his life as a paraplegic for the last 41 of his 53 years he provided vital notes in the "soundtracks" of the lives of his many friends and of strangers as well. Butch/Charlie received his Bachelors of University Studies from The University of New Mexico and used his knowledge to be of service to others. He was a teacher of English as a second language, volunteered at the Hawaiian Institute for human services, served as an occupational therapist's assistant for the Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific, was a volunteer with Common Bond gay and lesbian community center in Albuquerque, volunteered at Manzano del Sol retirement village, was an advocate for the handicapped helping with the 504 rehabilitation act (which improved access for the developmentally disabled). He was a VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) Alumni. Charlie/Butch also spent countless hours "wheeling" the city in search of areas in need of improvement for the physically challenged. He was a member of GARTC (greater Albuquerque recreational trails committee). Charlie/Butch had most recently become an advocate for the medical marijuana movement and was a supporter of a persons right to die. Many lives have been made better because of our dear departed friend who will always be remembered by those who knew him and loved him or were loved by him. He always believed the words of David L. Weatherford - "When faced with a challenge, look for a way, not a way out." We will love and cherish you forever, Your many, many friends.
