Barbara Ann Medwin-Wiersema 73, passed away peacefully at home on October 20, 2010 from complications of lung cancer. Having been diagnosed in 1994 and given a prognosis of roughly one year, her strong spirit of determination allowed her to survive until now, 16 years later. Born in upstate New York she has been a long-time resident of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her three children, Maurice Medwin; and her second husband Cornelius Wiersema; as well as her parents, Edward and Anna Fix; brother, Herbert Fix; and sister, Ella Mae Boyce. She is survived by her three children, Michael Medwin, Karen Herrera and Sandra Gomez; six grandchildren, Michael Gomez, Joseph Gomez, Jennifer Gomez, Charles Herrera, Daniel Herrera and Leeann Herrera; three great-grandchildren, David Gomez, Arielle Gomez and Jake Gomez; as well as numerous nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces. Barbara was a member of Grace Church of Albuquerque. She was a very happy and energetic person who loved being with people. Being the practical person that she was, she has graciously and selflessly donated her skeletal remains to the University of New Mexico for medical/scientific research. No memorial services are scheduled. She will be memorialized in the hearts of her loved ones and will be dearly missed.
