Leona Mae, 93+ years, died quietly on September 22, 2010 in Chandler, AZ, where she lived with her husband, Ed, who preceded her in death in March 2010. Leona was born in Apple Creek, OH, where she grew up and graduated from high school in 1935. Leona soon went to work as a cook at a state institution, where she developed her cooking and baking skills. She and Ed were married in Nov. 1936, later moved to Pennsylvania for some years, before moving to Los Alamos, NM in 1947, where they lived for nearly 38 years. Leona was a homemaker and mom, and then became the manager of the Los Alamos Schools cafeterias for 13 years. She then worked for Los Alamos National Laboratories as a file clerk before retiring in 1977. She was a charter member of the United Church of Los Alamos, and actively supported her husband and children in their church functions. She loved to host gatherings of family and friends, which often included some of her trademark baked goods. Following retirement, she and Ed lived in Albuquerque, NM, and then moved to Arizona in 1999. Leona has four children; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 9, at 10:30 a.m., at the Chandler Presbyterian Church, 1500 W. Germann Rd, Chandler, AZ 85286.
