CARLOS R. MONTOYA, AGE 95 AT DEATH. BATAAN & CORREGIDOR PRISONER OF WORLD WAR II SURVIVOR Carlos R. Montoya passed away on August 24, 2010 in San Diego, CA. Carlos left the side of his wife Betty Johnson Montoya; and his children Charles E., Donald, Marilyn, and Martin Montoya. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ofelia Montoya; and children, Nora, Linda, and Robert Montoya. Carlos had ten grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Carlos was born in Pena Blanca, NM on June 28, 1915 to Otilia De La O and Norberto Montoya and moved to Albuquerque in 1935. He was the brother of Soraida Armijo, Mauro Montoya, Rosa Lujan, Nick Montoya, Olivia Keefer, Dolores Woody, Lavina Correa, and Victoria Baca. Carlos was a prisoner of the Japanese Army from 1942 to 1945 and was forced to participate in the Bataan Death March. His time as captive of the Japanese Army included starvation camps in the Philippines, and at War's end he was taken to northwest Japan. He started his military career at age 25 with the New Mexico National Guard and departed for the Philippines in 1941 from Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. When Carlos returned from World War II he and Ofelia opened and managed Cocina de Carlos Restaurant in northwest Albuquerque then moved the restaurant to Lomas Street in northeast Albuquerque. A military burial will be held on August 31, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverside National Cemetery.
