Obituary for MCCABE

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday August 29, 2010

Anthony Lawrence "Larry" McCabe, 81, a New Mexico resident since 1987 died unexpectedly Wednesday night, August 25, 2010 with his bride of 59 years at his bedside. He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Betty Anne McDermott (husband Terry), Kathleen Potapchuk (husband John), Maureen Kilcommons (husband Tom), Rita Ollquist (husband Bob), Patricia McLaughlin (husband Bob), Eileen Patrick (husband Mike), Jeanne Reiffenberger (husband Rich); sons, Larry McCabe (wife Michelle), Kevin McCabe (wife Debbie), Brian McCabe (wife Cathy); 33 grandchildren; siblings Patricia, Veronica, Daniel; and many other friends and relatives. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Larry graduated from St. John's Prep in1948, attended St. John's University and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On June 23, 1951 he married the love of his life, Betty Haran, which began a long life of love, caring and lilting Irish laughter in the McCabe clan which grew to number seven girls and three boys. The children were raised on a steady diet of family loyalty, strong Christian beliefs and love for others occasionally seasoned with an Irish song or two from Dad. Wealthy far beyond his New York police detective's salary the family never wanted for the needed hug, a gentle nudge or a sympathetic ear over a cup of tea .While many seek worldly treasures Larry McCabe knew life's real treasure is in the value of faith, family and love for one another. He shared it with his bride and together they grew their fortune now stored in the hearts and souls of their children and grandchildren. It is a treasure not of this world, not of this life but of the life everlasting where those who know, love and serve God are given the greatest treasure of all: life eternal with God almighty. So while we mourn his death let's not forget to celebrate his life. A life well lived, well loved and well served. Well done, Larry McCabe! Well done, good and faithful servant!
