May Polivka, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, passed into eternal life on Friday, August 20, 2010. Born May 28, 1924 at Hastings, NE to John and Bendine Towler. Survivors include her son, Tom Granaas of Rio Rancho; daughters, Kathryn Lackner of Carlsbad, NM, and Nancy Hoover and husband Chris of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Maren Lackner-Baudet and Jordan Hoover; and grandsons, Jacob Lackner and Ryan Hoover. She is also survived by her long-time friend and companion, Charles B. Halter of Albuquerque; and special nephews, Rod Towler and wife, Janell of Shelton, NE and James S. Morrow of Blue Hill, NE. She was preceded in death by her 11-year-old son, Steve Granaas in 1973; by her husband, Joseph W. Polivka in 1994; by her brothers, John Jr., Frank, Roy and Richard Towler, and one sister, Martha Morrow; and by her parents. May worked in Hastings, NE and at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha as a legal and medical secretary. She married Lloyd A. Granaas and four children were born to the couple. They lived in Hastings and Omaha until 1963, when the family moved to Albuquerque. May worked for 25 years as Administrative Secretary for the Communication Department at the University of New Mexico, from 1966-1991, when she retired. She received the Regents Meritorious Service Award in 1988 and the Friend of the Department Award in 1999. She loved her years there and considered the people there to be her "second family". May married Joseph W. Polivka on August 4, 1972, and she assisted him in the operation of his business, Space Age Upholstery. She enjoyed baseball and was active in Roadrunner Little League for many years. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She also was an avid gardener and enjoyed her pet cat, KIKI, rescued as a feral kitten, from 1988-2006. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., at French - Westside Chapel. Private interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.
