Obituary for CARNEY

John Bryan Carney, Jr., 89, recently of Smyrna passed away Monday, August 9, 2010. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, August 13, 2010 in the Chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta with Rev. John L. Carney officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. in the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA. John was born in 1921 in Oklahoma City to the late John B. Carney, Sr. and Mattie Louise Crowder Carney. In 1939, he was in the first group of Boy Scouts to attend Philturn Camp (later called Philmont) in the mountains of New Mexico. After graduation from the University of Oklahoma in 1943, he joined the Navy and served in World War II on the USS Ward (until it was hit by a kamikaze plane in 1944) and on the USS Marsh. In 1946, he met and married Marjorie Knight in Redondo Beach, CA. He taught and continued his education (M.S. and Ph.D.) at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Arizona. He retired in 1987 after 23 years as a civil engineering professor at the University of New Mexico. He and his wife were active members of Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque and were members of the Young at Heart Choir. He was an avid tomato gardener and fly fisherman. He taught Sunday School and planned senior adult trips and programs until about three years ago. For almost a year he has been a resident of Delmar Gardens nursing home in Smyrna. Survivors include his wife Marjorie Carney; children, Nancy Christensen and her husband, Gary of Torrance, CA, Cathy Caudle and her husband, James of Powder Springs, John Carney and his wife, Jackie of Wetumpka, AL; granddaughters Tracy Christensen, Morgan Carney, Sarah Caudle; sister Ruth Bingham of Oklahoma City. The family will receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta (770) 424-4924.
