Obituary for LALICKER

Robert "Bob" G. Lalicker, 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 31, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Marjorie (Martin); daughters, Terry (Mark) Haley, Jeanette "Gigi" (Frank) Chinisci, all of Albuquerque and Lisa (Chris) Cook of Danville, CA; eight grandchildren, Richard and Robert Puglisi, David, Ben and Susie Chinisci, and Hayley, Katie and Conner Cook; a sister, Nancy (George) Shaffer of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was born to Carlton and Verna Lalicker in Cortez, CO on July 27, 1928 and lived in South Haven, KS until 1942, when his family moved to Albuquerque. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1946 and was a member of two of its state champion baseball teams. In the fall of 1946 Bob enrolled at the University of New Mexico as a member of the Naval ROTC program. While at UNM, he was a three-year baseball letterman, Battalion Commander of the NROTC Unit and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Bob graduated in 1950 and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. He served on destroyers during the Korean Conflict and received among others, a Bronze Star with Combat "V" for valor, the Korean Service Medal with two battle stars and the Navy Unit Citation. Bob remained in the Naval Reserve following active duty and retired as a Captain in the USNR. After active Navy duty, he returned to UNM where he was a Graduate Assistant and earned a Master's degree in Secondary Education. Bob was on the first faculty at Valley High School as a teacher and coach, and then returned to UNM where he held several administrative positions for the next 28 years. He retired in 1984 as Director of Development and Executive Director of the UNM Foundation. During his tenure in this position, the Presidential Scholarship Program, the UNM Foundation, and the Tom L. Popejoy Society were established. Bob was very active in community affairs and was on the Board of Directors of numerous organizations, including the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, the Bernalillo County Chapter of the Red Cross, the Heights Family YMCA, and for 17 years, the Charter Bank. He was president of the Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque, the UNM Alumni Lettermen's Association, the UNM NROTC Alumni Association, and the New Mexico Chapter of the Navy League. Bob was a lector and vestry member of the Cathedral Church of St. John. He was an ardent golfer and fisherman and will be remembered as a wonderful, caring husband, father, and grandfather and a friend to many. Bob enjoyed hearing and telling stories; he laughed easily and often. A Memorial Service will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. John, Fourth and Silver SW, on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Anna Kaseman Hall at the Cathedral.
