Obituary for KNICKERBOCKER

Elizabeth "Betty" Knickerbocker, 85, formerly of Peekskill, NY and a longtime Albuquerque, New Mexico resident, passed away July 14, 2010. She was born on May 4, 1925 in Peekskill, daughter of the late George B. and Elizabeth Knickerbocker. She was a 22-year veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as a flight nurse. Nikki entered the USAF in 1951 and retired 1973, as Lt. Colonel. She was part of many assignments around the world as a flight nurse, going to Alaska, Texas, then stationed at Scott AFB in Illinois. She did a TDY mission to Vietnam as a flight nurse. She received numerous commendation medals and AMD area ribbons. When she retired in Albuquerque in 1973, a big part of her life was golf. She was the Albuquerque City golf champion in 1997, the NM State senior golf champion twice; she played and was champion seven times at the course in Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. Nikki never stopped being a nurse at heart; stepping in to help her many friends in their time of need and volunteer work with numerous organizations. Betty is survived by her brother Richard Knickerbocker; sister Kay Lynch; sisters-in-law: Mary and Idola Knickerbocker; brother-in-law William Shirin; and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She was predeceased by her five brothers; and three sisters: George "Botsy", Edwin, William Knickerbocker, Christopher and Walter McGrath, her twin: Georgett Gaydos, Mae Shirin, Dorothy Knickerbocker. The family received friends on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at the E.O. Curry Funeral Home, Peekskill, where a celebration of her life was held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2010. Interment will be private at the convenience of her family. The family requests any donations be sent in Nikki's name to Hospice Association of Rensselaer County NY or the Alzheimer's Association.
