Obituary for DANIEL

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday July 09, 2010

Dean Howard Daniel, a true caballero, passed on Wednesday, July 7, 2010. He was born in Childress, Texas, on November 18, 1923, and had an especially strong and resourceful character that developed from his youthful experiences during the Great Depression. As an adult he attended Eastern New Mexico University, but his studies were interrupted by World War II. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater, where he bravely preceded the landing craft, sounding the depths to assure that they would not run aground prematurely. Following his honorable discharge, he was elated to marry his college sweetheart, Maxiena Earnest, and they spent 56 happy years together. He brought the family to Albuquerque in 1947 to accept a job maintaining steam locomotives for the Santa Fe Railroad. With the introduction of diesel engines these skills were no longer needed, so he began a career as a newspaper pressman at the Albuquerque Journal-Tribune. Later he helped print the San Francisco Chronicle and the Wall Street Journal, in the bay area, and the Salt Lake Tribune in Salt Lake City, Utah. He moved to Portales, New Mexico after retirement, and then spent several enjoyable years in Amarillo, Texas with his second wife, Neva. He returned to Albuquerque in 2007. He is survived by two daughters, Zeana Peck and Merideth Paxton; son-in-law, Alan Paxton; two grandchildren, Codi McKinley (and her husband, David) and Corey Carlos; and six great-grandchildren, Hazin and Irin McKinley and Courtney, Tristin, Jade, and Bodey Carlos. He also leaves Kay Rabinowitz, a dear friend. He was preceded in death by Maxiena and Neva; his parents, James and Eula; brothers, James and Clifton; and a daughter, Lynette. A graveside service will be held at the Floyd Cemetery in Floyd, NM on Friday, July 16, at 2:00 p.m. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2625 Pennsylvania NE, Suite 225, 87110.
