Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday May 30, 2010

Shirley Orgel Forman, born on October 18, 1921 to Anna Miriam Deutsch and Abraham Frank Orgel in Elizabeth, New Jersey, died on May 27, 2010 at the age of 88. She grew up in Elizabeth, graduated from Battin High School in 1938, and married Bernard Isaac Forman in 1941. Her beloved husband died 51 years later, in 1992. Shirley is survived by three daughters: Marcia Grossman and husband Joseph, Judith Forman and husband Mark Roman, all of California, and Rachel Justus and husband Charles of Albuquerque; three granddaughters, Deborah Grossman and husband Alan Peel of Maryland, Jessica Grossman and husband Joel Kaufman of California, Rebecca Justus of Boston and Albuquerque; two precious great-granddaughters, Naomi and Rowyn Peel; a brother-in-law, Edward Forman of New Jersey; eight nephews and nieces, several great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as cousins in various parts of the country. Shirley's parents and two older brothers, Julius and William Orgel, predeceased her. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who helped her husband achieve his ambition of becoming a college professor, and raised their children to be productive members of their communities. She was very proud that her three daughters are college graduates as well. Her youngest granddaughter is a student at Boston University. Wherever Shirley lived, she worked in many offices as secretary, typist, word processor, and enjoyed "temping" during their eleven-year residence in the Washington, D.C. area. She especially enjoyed meeting new people and learning new office procedures wherever she was sent. Shirley also maintained her activism in several charitable organizations for many years. She enjoyed sewing for her girls and playing Mah Jongg with friends in New Jersey, Minnesota, Maryland, and New Mexico. Shirley was an outgoing woman, eager to talk to people and get to know them. Wherever she lived she made friends and until her death communicated with friends she made more than thirty years ago while living in Mankato, MN. She maintained correspondence with many relatives and friends all over the country via email on her computer. In the course of their lives, the Formans traveled around the USA several times by car, lived in England on a college faculty exchange program in 1973, lived in Hawaii, traveled to Israel, England (a 2nd time), Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and lived in New Jersey, Minnesota, Virginia, and Maryland, finally settling in Albuquerque in 1987 to be near one of their daughters. Cremation has taken place; at Shirley's request there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Forman Family Forest in the American Independence Park in Jerusalem, Israel (1-800-542-8733, or www.jnf.org), or to the American Heart Association. The family wishes to thank the staff of Ambercare Hospice and Manzano Del Sol Nursing Home for their care and support. Those who wish to express condolences may do so at www.danielsfuneral.com.
