Obituary for YATES

Oscar Flavil Yates, 93, departed this world to meet his Lord on April 28, 2010. He graduated from Haynesville (LA) high school, Northeast Center of LSU Junior College and then from Louisiana State University where he graduated first in his class of Petroleum Engineers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augusta Gillespie Yates and Junius Alma; sisters, Ruby Yates Kaylor and Clotiel Yates; brothers, Bert and Charles Yates; and his son Steven Arthur Yates. Oscar is survived by his sister, Floyce Yates Ramsey of Baton Rouge, LA; his daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Yates of Chico, CA and her children, Robert Ashley Gaudette of Keller, TX , his wife Michelle and daughter Sara; and Stephanie Gaudette Roos of Chico, CA, her husband Eric Roos and two sons, Grant and Andrew; his daughter-in-law Shanna Brockman Yates of College Station , TX, and her son, Steven Yates of the Woodlands, TX, and wife Michelle and their children Sean, Madeline and Chloe, and Shanna's daughters Shelley and Stacey Yates of Albuquerque and Madrid, NM; his son Franklin Edward Yates of Albuquerque, NM, and wife Sharon, and sons, Aaron, Kyle, Tucker and Walker; his wife Katherine Smith Yates of Albuquerque, NM; his sister-in-law, Evelyn Peterson Yates of Fargo, ND; his sister-in-law, Hazel Chapman of Baton Rouge, LA; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Yates was commissioned at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in the V7 Graduate Engineering program (one of the "90 day wonders") to teach Diesel Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley and at North Carolina State in Raleigh. He had post-war business training at Harvard University for supervising distribution of surplus Navy equipment while stationed at Long Beach, CA. After completing four years of service, he returned to his job as a Petroleum Engineer with Humble Oil & Refining Company (Exxon), where he was employed for 26 years. He also taught engineering courses at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, TX and Lee College in Baytown, TX for 14 years. Oscar was an active member of Netherwood Park Church of Christ. He loved studying the Bible, playing football as quarterback, skiing, and golfing and watching those sports as he got older. He was a true LSU Tiger and a Dallas Cowboy fan. He also loved telling jokes and stories about his travels to many foreign countries and most of the US states. A visitation will be held on May 6, 2010 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at French's at 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. There will be a private interment at the Veteran's Cemetery in Santa Fe on May 7, 2010; and a memorial service will be held at Netherwood Park Church of Christ at 5101 Indian School Rd, near I-40 and San Mateo on May 8, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. with David Nestor, preaching minister, officiating.
