Obituary for MURPHY

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday March 12, 2010

Donna G. Murphy, 97, resident of Albuquerque since 1958 passed away quietly at home with her family and friend Betty on March 2, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Paul J. Murphy (Lt. Col., USAF, Ret.). She is survived by three sons: Donald P. and wife, Bette Cutbirth of Las Cruces, Kevin D. and wife, Susan (Lynch) Murphy of Albuquerque and Kim D. and wife, Patricia Leigh Disert of Albuquerque. She is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren: Emily (Murphy) Inman and husband, Chris of Highlands Ranch, CO, Shannon Murphy and Andrew Murphy, both of Albuquerque; and two great-grandchildren: Katherine Inman and Caroline Inman. Mrs. Murphy was born on October 12, 1912, a birthday she shared with grand-daughter Emily, in Benicia, CA, the middle child of Donald Wesley Wilson and Ruby Estelle (Kirgan) Wilson. A third-generation Californian, she worked as a telephone operator in San Francisco as a young woman until she met a dashing, young Army Air Corp. "flyboy" pilot from Boston, MA and was married shortly thereafter on February 28, 1944 in Marysville, CA. Her husband called it "a date that lasted a lifetime". As a military wife, she attended to her family, especially when her husband was overseas in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. With each re-assignment, Mrs. Murphy willingly re-established her family in air base communities across the country from California, to Michigan, to New Mexico and Florida. Her natural intelligence and curiosity made each move a family adventure. She enjoyed reading, bridge and gardening, but most of all she enjoyed and took great pride in the accomplishments of all family members, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, even at the very end. She wholeheartedly embraced new members into the family with love and made them most welcome and appreciated. Her quiet strength, caring and compassionate nature will be greatly missed. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery, where she will rest in peace with her husband. A private family ceremony is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends for the Public Library c/o Erna Fergusson Library, 3700 San Mateo NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
