Obituary for HESS

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Tuesday March 09, 2010

Patricia Hess of Albuquerque-educator, mother and grandmother, musician, artist, traveler, friend to many, and ever curious and outgoing-passed away Friday morning, March 5, 2010 in Santa Fe. She is survived by her son and his wife; three grandchildren; her sister; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Bisbee, Arizona, she attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, where she completed a double major in music and education. She married, gave birth to a son, and spent the next few years in West Texas, teaching in the public schools and singing alto in the choir. Moving to Albuquerque in the mid-fifties, Patricia continued to teach third grade at Bel Air Elementary, and then mathematics at Hoover Middle School. In the mid-seventies she moved to Tempe and obtained a master's degree in mathematics at Arizona State University, and upon her return to Albuquerque she became a math consultant for the Albuquerque Public Schools. She retired from APS and moved to Fort Worth, where she worked as a math curriculum consultant for the school district. Then she became a consultant for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and traveled the country to observe and help stimulate innovative math programs. In retirement she spent her time playing the piano, contract bridge, traveling, cooking, reading, and spending time with close friends and family. On Sundays she loved going to concerts at the Church of Beethoven. She was always upbeat and positive about life, and was generous and supportive of others. We miss her dearly.
