Obituary for THORPE

Mary Lynn Whitnell Thorpe of Albuquerque passed away February 12, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, O.B. (Barney) Thorpe of the family home; sister Nancy Whitnell Harris of Kansas City, MO; children Susan Gaultney and husband Jake; John Thorpe and wife Cheryl; Dan Thorpe and wife Sharon; Tom Thorpe and wife Jackie, all of Albuquerque, as well as ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mary was born in Marion, KS on October 23, 1926, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from Westport High School. She attended Lindenwood College for girls her freshman year and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1947 with a Bachelor of Journalism. Upon graduation, Mary moved to Albuquerque where she and Barney met and married in 1950 and raised their four children. Mary then started her career at the University of New Mexico where she was a secretary in the Biology Dept, and an Executive Secretary to one UNM Vice President, and two UNM Presidents. She retired in 1989. A longtime member of Monte Vista Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Mary was active in many areas of church work. Mary was a loving and dearly loved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd, Albuquerque, NM.
