Obituary for SERNA

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Thursday February 11, 2010

Felix Cordova Serna, aka Buddy, left this world on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at University Medical Center in El Paso, TX from complications after a stroke. He was born August 29, 1941 in Rincon, NM to Pedro Munoz Serna and Josefina Cordova Serna. He graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1961 and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from NMSU in 1965. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Stacy and her fiance Randy. Also surviving Felix are his brothers, Francisco and wife Gloria, Ruben and wife Dorothy, Jesus and wife Cherri, and Pedro; his sisters, Maria Luisa, Elisaida and husband Ernesto Salas, Cecilia and husband Ramon Miranda, and Gloria. There are also 14 nieces and nephews; including his special great-niece and artistic protege Alexandria. He will also be deeply missed by his father-in-law Louie Ickes; and mother-in-law Joanne; his brother-in-laws, Robert and wife Val, Edward and wife Traci and children Philip and Rachel, Louie and wife Jimi, and Michael and wife Jennifer. He was also devoted to several four-legged children who each have a special story and unique name. Felix was an outstanding artist who excelled in everything from oil painting to photography. He was a carver, a carpenter, a sculptor, and a restorer. He participated in many art shows including the New Mexico State Fair shows, Dia de La Raza art show, the Hispanic Culture Festival Invitational Show, and the Two Flag Festival Art Show. He restored countless works of art when their owners thought there was no hope after an accidental tear or splash of liquid on a painting or photo. He photographed many events and participated in Save Our Sculptures sponsored by the NM Arts Division. He was instrumental in bringing recognition to the fact that there are sculptures, not merely headstones, in the cemeteries all over our state. He received many accolades in his lifetime including a commendation from the New Mexico Secretary of State and a Special Recognition achievement award from De Colores. His most recent achievement was retiring after 19 years from PPG Industries, where he was a territory manager in the Lowes stores. Most of all, Felix was a friend to many people. His greatest joy in life was his ability to help other people achieve their goals or help them through a bump in the road. He was a teacher at all times and taught us that our lives should be dedicated to doing good in this world. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday February 11, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at La Paz-Grahams, 555 W Amador, Las Cruces. A gathering after the service for all who wish to share memories of his life will be held at the home of Louie and Jimi Ickes, 3337 N. Dona Ana Rd, Las Cruces. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the NMSU Foundation, Memorial Gift for Felix Cordova Serna, PO Box 3590, Las Cruces, NM 88003; or the Humane Society of Dona Ana County. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. ~Kahlil Gibran Services have been entrusted to the care of La Paz - Graham's Funeral Home 555 West Amador, Las Cruces New Mexico 88005
