Raymond J. Lucero. Fondly known as "Ray and Pops", age 70, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, boss and friend, passed away quietly after a short battle with cancer, Thursday, February 4, 2010. Ray graduated from Valley High School where he lettered four years in golf and wrestling. Out of high school, he joined the Air National Guard and started his career in flooring with his uncle Billy with Heights Carpet in 1959. In the Guard, he met Joe Salaz "Bobby", where he was introduced to Bobby's sister, Dorothy. Dorothy and Ray soon married and started their family in the Village of Los Ranchos. The remained married for 45 years until our beloved Dorothy passed away in 2008. Ray and Dorothy started Ray's Carpet out of their home and incorporated in 1972. Early on in his career, Ray started relationships in business with Jaynes Corporation and focused primarily on commercial flooring. Today, Ray's has done business with nearly every major General Contractor in New Mexico and includes projects in Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Nevada. In the last 20 years, Ray's also grew into one of the largest Builder Contractors in the state. Ray had a love for horse racing over the past 25 years and owned several horses. He also loved the outdoors, fishing, sports and of course golf. In 2001 with the help of his sons, staff and our vendors started a customer appreciation golf tournament which supports families in need or local charities. A very proud moment for Ray was in 2005 when his company was New Mexico's Minority Owned Small Business of the Year. "Pops" was loved by all who were fortunate enough to meet him and he will be missed like no other, but let us celebrate his life. His legacy will live in all of us forever. And lastly, for all of you that were a part of his life, especially his doctors and care givers, we are forever thankful and you will always be a part of our family. Ray is survived by his loving children, Ray Lucero, Jr. and wife Jennifer, Gerald Lucero and wife Monica, Martin Lucero and wife Stacy, Chris Lucero and Bernadette Frederick and husband Richard; his grandchildren, Racquel, Janelle, Ray, Justin, Nathan, Jessica, Brandon, Elizabeth, Nicole, Erica, Andres, Noah, Dylan, Luke, Bailey, Vanessa and Julian; a sister, Patsy Perez and husband Eddie; and many other relatives and friends.
