Obituary for DURAN

John F. Duran Sr., 82, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, February 1, 2010. At his side was his wife of 63 years, Socorro; his children, John Duran Jr., Ernie Duran, Tony Duran and Roberta Gabaldon and husband Danny. Mr. Duran is also survived by his six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, Ambrose Duran and wife Sarah; sister, Mabel Salazar; and many other family members. John was preceded in death by his parents Ambrose and Lucy Duran; brother, Billy Duran; and sister, Dora Garcia. He was born in Albuquerque, moved to Santa Fe and later lived in Washington DC where he attended Virginia Military Institute. John then enlisted in the US Navy in 1944, served during WWII and was stationed in San Diego and Maui. He earned the rank of Seaman First Class aboard the USS Wasp and served in the Pacific Theatre before his honorable discharge in 1946. Mr. Duran was a member of the Shrine of St. Bernadette Catholic Community and was also a member of the American Legion Post 13. John is greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A Rosary will be recited Sunday, February 7, 2010, 6:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 8, 2010, 9:00 a.m. at the Shrine of St. Bernadette, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE with burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
