Obituary for SMITH

RICHARD E. "DICK" SMITH Dick played his last hand December 19, 2009 at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque, NM with his sister, Dorothy, and a friend, Lewie Wickham, at his side. He died due to heart failure and complications from diabetes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole; parents, John and Margaret Smith. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Hammond (Jorge) of Pena Blanca; a son, Jeremy Gordon of Taos; a niece, Susie Davis (Jeff) of Chandler AZ.; a nephew, John Billingsley (Sherry) of Loma Rica, CA and several great nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends across the country. He was born in Alamosa, CO, February 27, 1939. Moved to Los Alamos in the early 40's ,and grew up in the Pojoaque Valley; graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in 1956; served in the US Navy until 1963. Returned to the University of New Mexico to study Engineering, upon graduating he worked for the NM Highway Dept. and several surveying companies. He was a partner in a surveying business in Taos during the 70's. Moved back to Santa Fe where he and Dean Williamson opened Smith & Williamson Surveying, during that time served as president of the New Mexico Surveyors Association, and retired in 2006. He and his wife Carole also owned the Travel Connection in Santa Fe. Dick has been cremated. This spring there will be a gathering to celebrate Dick's life. A special thank you to Willie Watkins, Beth Nolan, Carlos Asuna and Lewie Wickham for their support at the end of his life.
