Helen 'Elena' Ortiz, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday surrounded by all her family. She was born on October 12, 1926, and raised as a child on a small farm in Cubero, NM, but lived most of her life in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucia Apodaca; her father, Julio Sanchez; her husband Arnold Ortiz, Sr.; and her son, Arnold Ortiz, Jr. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She is survived by her sisters, Raquel 'Rachel' Perea and Lupe Bustamante; daughters, Gloria M. Baca and Julia D. Sedillo; her sons, Donald Ortiz and wife, Kathy, Richard Ortiz and Michael Ortiz; ten grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Helen loved family functions, parties, going to the fair, balloon fiesta and would happily catch a ride with any family member who was headed to the casino. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at Salazar and Sons. The Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 8, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, located at 5901 St. Joseph Avenue NW, with internment to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Perner, Tommy Marquez, Richard Sedillo, Anthony Sedillo, Joe San Nicolas and Lawrence Ortiz. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Gallegos and Richard Ortiz.
