Obituary for HERMAN

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday January 03, 2010

Doris L. Herman passed away on December 30, 2009. She is survived by her son, Marc Herman; and her son, Judd Herman, his wife, Allison, and their daughter, Catherine. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was born in 1921, and in spite of a very impoverished upbringing, she was determined to pursue higher education. She was a pioneer female physician; she was one of the first women to attend Georgetown University Medical School; and in 1952, she graduated from USC Medical School, finishing first in her class. She served for many years as a pathologist at the Los Angeles County Medical Center. She conducted research, and with other distinguished physicians, in the 1960s facilitated a groundbreaking study linking smoking to lung cancer. In 1971 she moved to Gallup, NM to work at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, where she ultimately served as Chief Pathologist. During her long career she was a dedicated physician and an inspiring mentor. She was kind and generous, and especially loved to assist young people pursuing higher education and career development. Dr. Herman retired to Albuquerque in 1993, and in retirement became an accomplished amateur painter, often winning recognition at the New Mexico State Fair. Memorial contributions are encouraged to the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNM Foundation or Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation, Hospice Services. Those who wish to express condolences may send them to the family via the Riverside Funeral Home, 225 San Mateo Blvd, N.E., Albuquerque, NM 87108; (505) 764-9663.
