Obituary for COOLEY

Mr. Thomas Walter Cooley, 82, of Grenada, died Saturday, December 26, 2009, at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital in Jackson following a stroke. He was born December 1, 1927, in Lobdell, MS, to the late James Rasmus and Ellen Evans Cooley. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Grace, son Thomas Walter, Jr. (Lynn, Logan and Max) of Lunenburg, MA, and daughters, Peggy (Mike) Martin, Albuquerque, NM, Martha (Gregg, Gavin, Dane, Chase and Skyler) Thomas, Gilbert, AZ, and Patricia (Ryan) Schwarz, Albuquerque, NM. Walter attended several schools growing up in Arkansas, Louisiana and Tennessee, completing his education in the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Midway CV-41 for 5 years, attaining rank of Aviation Machinist's Mate Third Class upon honorable discharge in 1951. Mr. Coooley was a retired mechanic, machinist and woodworker. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and Gore Springs Community Club. Walter enjoyed many activities including traveling to Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico. He loved fishing and gardening, while also being a talented artist in silver jewelry making, carving, woodworking, carpentry and furniture making. Walter loved his family, the Lord, his church family and especially pastor Harvey Springer and wife, Joy. He is also survived by three special sisters-in-law, Shirley Cooley, Gloria Chamberlain and Billie Chamberlain and two nieces, Patty Mitchell and Jane Abbey. Funeral services will be Thursday, December 31, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Harvey Springer officiating. Interment will follow at Gore Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 30, 2009, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Providence Baptist Church Building Fund; Grenada, MS 38901; or to Gore Springs Methodist Church, Gore Springs, MS 38929. Garner-Harper Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
