Obituary for NESTER

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Wednesday December 30, 2009

Harry Nester, 85 passed away at his home in Rio Rancho on December 27, 2009. Harry was born February 18, 1924 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the only child of Hugh and Minnie Nester, a city commissioner of Stillwater and a legal secretary, respectively. Harry participated in the invasion of France during World War II and served in a field hospital unit under heavy German pressure during the Battle of the Bulge, receiving three Bronze Service Stars and the good Conduct Medal. After the war, Harry returned to Stillwater to start a family with his wife Claudine and to finish his degree at Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University). Upon graduation, Harry began a job at Conoco in Ponca City, Oklahoma, rising through the ranks to become a senior executive at Conoco in Houston and then Aminoil and later a consultant to Tesoro. Harry and Claudine had four sons, Pat (presently of Driftwood, Texas), Don (Wichita Falls, Texas), Rob (Austin, Texas), and Scott (Fresno, California). Retiring with Claudine to Rio Rancho in 1986, Harry pursued an avid interest in golf and became active in Rotary, making many lifelong friends in the community. After Claudine's untimely passing in 1988, Harry married Joanne Kirby of Rio Rancho, who shared his enthusiasm for golf, bridge, and travel. In 1995, after a brief illness, Joanne died. Harry then married a friend of Joanne's, Marie Conn, also of Rio Rancho. Harry and Marie enjoyed more than 13 years of golf, travel, bridge, gin rummy, Scrabble, excellent conversation, extended families, and good friends. Harry is survived by Marie, his four sons, grandchildren Meg, Mark, Max, Matthew, Jay, Leah, Paul, and Will and great granddaughter Ayla. A man of uncommon concern for others, great good humor, and formidable accomplishments (among them, a hole-in-one at number 4 East at Chamisa Hills), Harry Nester will be sorely missed and warmly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. A visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Road and Meadowlark Lane, Rio Rancho, NM.
