Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Friday December 18, 2009

Timothy John De Young passed away at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on December 13, 2009 due to complications from brain cancer. Tim was born on October 23, 1948, in Los Angeles, California and lived his earlier years throughout Southern California. He is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Connie Meadowcroft; his daughters, Alana De Young and Elise De Young, all of Albuquerque; his mother, Donna De Young of Carlsbad, California; his brother Rick and wife Mabel of Sutherlin, Oregon; and his sister Sheri and husband Nick of Victor, Montana; His father, Quintin De Young, whose love, wit, and spirit Tim memorialized in song by writing, performing and producing The Quiet Game, passed away in 1998. A very gifted and talented man in so many ways, Tim sought life's opportunities with a keen intelligence and deep passion. From his diverse early experiences, Tim developed an enduring interest in teaching others. After graduating from Chapman College in 1970, he spent several years with the Semester at Sea program mentoring college students while traveling the world. Tim then joined the Peace Corps and traveled to Nepal where he constructed water delivery systems throughout mountainous rural communities, spawning his life-long interest in water resources. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Government from the Claremont Graduate School and co-authoring with his mentor Merrill Goodall California Water: a New Political Economy, Tim began a very successful academic career at Pennsylvania State University in 1977. Tim and Connie moved to Albuquerque in 1979 where he joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico. With characteristic drive and confidence, Tim decided on a mid-life career change and attended the University of New Mexico Law School, graduating with honors in 1990. Tim then joined the Modrall Sperling Law Firm where he specialized in water law for more than 19 years. Music was an enduring source of joy in Tim's life. A gifted guitarist and mandolin player, Tim played a variety of music throughout the years. Most notably, Tim was a founding member of the Adobe Brothers and their recent CD release was a proud achievement. Sports also played a major role in Tim's life, proceeding from baseball to volleyball to basketball to fly fishing to golf. Especially meaningful was time spent coaching his daughters in soccer and basketball. Blessed with a zeal for life, a mischievous smile, an enduring optimism, and a wonderful sense of humor, Tim touched and enriched so many lives. He was deeply proud of his daughters and their many accomplishments. Tim's special fondness for his "harem" consisting of his daughters, Alana and Elise, as well as Rachel and Justine, always will be a treasured memory. He will be forever remembered as an inspirational husband, devoted father and loyal friend. Memorial donations in Tim's name to support local youth music education may be made to the Outpost Educational Fund, P.O. Box 4543, Albuquerque, NM 87196 or online at Outpostspace.org.
