Obituary for SACKETT

Published in the Albuquerque Journal on Sunday December 06, 2009

Barbara Lee Tiedebohl Woozle Lady Gone Hence, Dec. 3, 2009 Barbara was a gifted artist, working in oil, watercolor, pen & ink, enamel, beading and fabric. She also wrote in many genres. She sold her first works, painted eggs, at age 10. Perhaps best known for creating stuffed animals called "Woozles," each unique in appearance and carrying its own story. She gave them to many friends and sold them through Suzette's, a shop in the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe where she also sold embroidered clothing. Barb and her husband Skip were avid balloonists beginning in 1975, owning Kokopeli, a Barnes balloon. Barb cut and sewed 5-foot tall Kokopeli figures to the balloon skirt and made all the enamel Kokopeli balloon pins. For a time, Barb and Skip flew balloons commercially at the Balloon Ranch in Del Norte, CO and in Las Vegas, NV. Barb enjoyed animals, camping, painting, the Rio Grande Zoo, parties, jazz, Indian food, conversation with friends, and dirty martinis (three olives, please)--not necessarily in that order. She was a long-time volunteer at the Museum of Albuquerque as a docent and "Assistant Exhibitionist." Born 1927 in Chicago, IL. Attended public schools, including New Trier High School. Moved and graduated from Albuquerque High School ('45). Attended UNM. Married James Abercrombie (daughter, Georgia Lee). Divorced. Married W.R. "Skip" Sackett (daughter Marianne Carol). Skip died in 1992 and will be remembered for his piloting skills, expertise at fixing nearly anything, a wicked dry sense of humor and his ability to teach wild deer to shake hands. Survived by daughter Marianne (John) McKiernan; grandsons Dominic (Angela) Blaz, Christopher (Kelly) Blaz, Nathan Santa Maria; great grandchildren David, Anthony, Jessica and Elijah; great-great grandson Logan, and brother-in-law Walter Ashleigh-Phear. Barbara is also survived by numerous friends and relations: Helen and John Wise, Joan and Roy Blaz, Carolyn "Sami" Sanborn, Gil and Julia Clarke, Jean Newcomb, Howard Newcomb, Jessica La Londe, Donna and Arnold Tucker, Marty Perleman, Mike and Susan English, Mike Glover and a zillion others. She enjoyed making new friends among the kind caregivers of NM Cancer Center and Health Care Odyssey as they cared for her. A service celebrating Barbara's life will be held at Monte Vista Christian Church (3501 Campus NE, Albuquerque) at 3:00 p.m. on December 8, 2009. Woozles welcome. Dress casually. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rio Grande Zoo or the charity you are most passionate about.
