Obituary for DEGEER

Major Stanley Lee DeGeer USAF (Ret.), 93, of Albuquerque, NM, died at home December 1, 2009. Born August 15, 1916 in Hanover, CO he was one of five children of Ernest R. and Frances McKeehen DeGeer. In 1942 he married Eloise McCloskey of Manitou Springs, CO and enlisted in the Air Corps becoming a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot and Operations Officer in Italy. After a jeep injury he was medically retired to Colorado. He and Eloise moved to California where he attended and graduated from Whittier College. Enroute back to Colorado they visited Los Alamos, NM, were attracted by the mountains and trees, and moved there for 17 years where Stanley taught school. He received a Masters of Education from Colorado College. Upon retirement from teaching he earned a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Arizona and managed an active retirement facility in Colorado Springs until relocating to New Mexico. Every year, Stan returned to Colorado for the Pikes Peak auto race. As the race historian he wrote and published four books and a pamphlet on the subject. He is survived by his wife, Eloise; four children and their spouses, Ann and Michael Weldon of Grand Prairie, TX, Donald and Gail DeGeer of Overland Park, KS, David and Carol DeGeer of Albuquerque, and Janis and Burt Goldstein of Westfield, NJ; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson; and his sister, Harriett and her husband J.B. Ford of Florence, KY. Stanley was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, the 325th Checkertail Clan, the Day Breakers Toastmasters, the National Education Association, the Old Colorado City Historical Society and the Let's Talk group at the Vineyard, where he resided.
