Obituary for BROWN

Kenneth George Brown, 67, born February 4, 1942, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents Chester K. Brown and Louise U. Brown; grandparents Nellie Shibley Mahboub and Said Mahboub; niece Shirley Rosie Brown,; and father-in-law Sal Gurule, whom he looked to as a Father and Friend. He is survived by his wife and friend of 37 years, Shirley Brown; and sons Thomas Brown and Kenny Brown; his three dearly loved grandchildren Zoey, Madison and Diego; his sister Annelle, husband (Gary); and godson, Sean; sister Angelle Brown; and brother Ron and his wife Sue, and their children Caton and Chet. Shirley's family was very dear and close to Kenneth. He loved and respected his mother-in-law Emma; brothers-in-law Peter Gurule (Ronnie and Steven), Ken Gurule, Jerry Gurule and wife Lisa (Kyle, Carey and Allison), Billy Gurule (Samuel, Samantha, Matthew, Jonathan), Keith Gurule and wife Janell (Bryce); sister-in-law Diane Jackson and husband Rodney (Joey, Jennifer and Tyler), and many friends and colleagues who loved and respected him. He attended grade school and high school at Our Lady of Sorrows, Bernalillo and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Law. He served as an assistant district attorney, had a law practice in Bernalillo for nine years during which time he served as the Town Attorney, and in 1984 he was elected District Court Judge in the 13th Judicial District, a position he held for twenty years. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his service as District Judge and was responsible for the creation of Grade Court, a specialty program he started in 1999 that is credited with keeping young people in school and resulting in a very low rate of recidivism. Ken loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren, which was the major reason he retired from the bench. He will be deeply missed by the many lives he touched during his career. Visitation will be held at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming Blvd., NE Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday, November 15, 2009, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. followed by the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Mass will be held on Monday, November 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lay of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, with the Rev. Fr. William "Bill" Sanchez officiating. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven. Pallbearers will be Diego Chavez Brown, Sean Brown, Hooky Apodaca, Peter Gurule, Jerry Gurule and Billy Gurule; Honorary Pallbearers: the 13th Judicial District Court Judges, Debra Farrar, Senator Michael Sanchez, George H. Perez, Ronald Abousleman, Al Briley, Alfred Baca, Ken Gurule, Keith Gurule, Camille Chavez, and Kelly Baker.
