Obituary for KORTKAMP

Karl Robert Kortkamp, a long time resident of Albuquerque passed away suddenly at his home on November 10, 2009. He is survived by his wife Kathryn; and children Katie, Kerry and Kevin. Born on April 3, 1952 in Seattle, WA, he was the only son of Walter and Ruth Kortkamp. After receiving his Electrical Engineering Degree at the University of Washington, he obtained his master at Stanford. The Air Force brought him to Albuquerque. After his discharge, he chose to make Albuquerque his home and worked for BDM and a Neurosurgeon designing computer equipment. He worked for Silicon Graphic (SGI) for 20+ years as a systems engineer. He designed supercomputers and was the lead systems engineer and architect on the NMCAC Altix ICE Supercomputer. He was considered an authority for high performance computing and visualization. He was a loving father and devoted husband. His joy for his life extended to all he met and he often called himself an amateur gourmet cook. He built radio control planes and enjoyed golf. We will all miss him dearly. Memorial service will be Saturday, November 14, 2009, 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust St., NE (I-25 and MLK.). In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Pre-Engineering/ Supercomputer Program, Manzano High School, 12200 Lomas Blvd, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112.
